Expense Split Calculator
Group trips and shared bills rarely split evenly. One person pays the hotel, another covers dinner, and nobody remembers who still owes what. Enter what each person paid and get a clear, fair settlement plan in seconds.
Everyone shares the total cost equally. List what each person actually paid, and the calculator works out who owes who.

Once you calculate, a practical next step will show here.
How expense splitting actually works
Picture a road trip with three friends. One pays for gas, another books the cabin, and the third grabs groceries. Nobody paid the same amount, but everyone should still cover an equal share of the total. That gap between what someone paid and what they owe is called their balance.
A positive balance means that person is owed money. A negative balance means they still need to pay in. Settling up just means moving money between people until every balance reaches zero, using as few payments as possible.
The formula, broken down
A positive balance shows how much a person is still owed. A negative balance shows how much they still need to hand over. The settlement plan simply pairs up the biggest debts with the biggest credits until both hit zero.
A worked example
Four friends went camping for the weekend. Here is what each person paid.
| Person | Paid | Fair share | Balance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alex | $120 | $55 | +$65 |
| Jamie | $60 | $55 | +$5 |
| Sam | $40 | $55 | −$15 |
| Riley | $0 | $55 | −$55 |
Total spent was $220, split four ways at $55 each. Riley pays Alex $55, Sam pays Alex $10, and Sam pays Jamie $5. Three simple payments, and everyone lands at zero.
